Which is the right pool for you?

You’ve made up your mind: you want your own pool. Finally, no more crowded outdoor pools, no more vacation planning around hotel pool times. But then the research begins and you quickly realize that the pool world speaks its own language. GRP, PP, steel wall, natural pool, it all sounds professional, but what does that mean for you in concrete terms?

Many pool buyers make decisions based on incomplete information. Often only the purchase price is considered, while too little attention is paid to follow-up costs and long-term aspects. This quickly creates a picture that does not cover the entire reality. Suppliers naturally present their technology in the best possible light. This makes it all the more important for you as the buyer to maintain an overview and this is exactly where we can support you.

The 60-second check:
Which pool really suits you?

Before you get lost in technical details, answer these five key questions honestly:

Budget check

Question 1: “What can you really afford – including all hidden costs?”

  • Up to €5,000: Above-ground pool or simple steel wall pool
  • 5.000-15.000 €: High-quality steel wall pool, partially sunken
  • 15.000-35.000 €: GRP prefabricated pool or PP pool
  • 35.000-80.000 €: Individual concrete pool or natural pool

An often underestimated factor is the additional costs. In addition to the actual pool price, there are considerable additional costs for groundwork, technology and initial equipment, which will significantly increase your budget.

Space and feasibility

Question 2: “Do you really have enough space and is your garden suitable for building?”

Many people massively underestimate the space required. An 8×4 meter pool requires at least 12×8 meters of garden space. What’s more, slopes can double the costs and difficult ground makes standard solutions impossible.

Truth of use

Question 3: “How will you really use the pool?”

Be honest: do you plan to swim every day or will the pool mainly be used at weekends and on vacation? This answer influences everything from the size to the technology to the heating.

Care readiness

Question 4: “How much time do you really want to invest in pool maintenance?”

A pool without automatic systems needs ten to twenty minutes of attention every day. With full automation, it only takes a few minutes a week, but this costs between 5,000 and 15,000 euros extra.

Long-term perspective

Question 5: “Is this your house for the next 20 years?”

Pools are real estate investments. A high-quality pool increases the value of the house, a poorly planned one can even reduce its value.

Strengths and limitations of the pool types

Each construction method has its own advantages and challenges. A clear view of both sides will help you to make the right decision so that you can enjoy your pool in the long term.

Above ground pools:
The underestimated compromise

Promise: Fast, inexpensive, flexible
In practice: Often considerable damage after just a few years due to sun and material wear, which can lead to total failure

Hidden costs per year:

  • New film: 200-600 €
  • Filters and cartridges: 150-300 €
  • Chemicals: 200-400 €
  • Electricity costs: 300-600 €

Who is it really suitable for?
Tenants, families with young children (test phase), very limited budgets

PP pools:
The flexible premium solution

Promise: Tailor-made, durable, versatile
In practice: Highest quality, but also corresponding costs

Advantage of PP pools:

  • Free form design possible
  • Excellent insulation (low heating costs)
  • Easy to repair
  • UV-resistant and frost-resistant

The catch:
High acquisition costs and professional installation are essential

Steel wall pools:
The solid middle ground with pitfalls

Promise: Proven technology, good price-performance ratio
In practice: service life varies greatly from a few years to over a decade

What you need to look out for:

  • Wall thickness from 0.6 mm,
    better 0.8 mm
  • Inner shell at least 0.8 mm
  • Solid substructure with concrete slab
  • Skimmers and nozzles in brand quality

The most common problems:
leaks due to poor substructure, film tears due to sharp edges, rusting steel walls on cheap models

CSF pools:
Professional, but limited

Promise: Durable, easy to maintain, quick installation
In practice: Very good solution with high quality, but you have to rely on standard molds

What you need to plan for:

  • Transportation requires good planning (crane required, narrow access roads impossible)
  • Repairs are possible, but should be carried out by a professional
  • Limited color selection, no later changes
  • With careful processing, the surface remains intact for many years

Ideal for:
Quality-conscious people who are satisfied with standard sizes and want professional installationS

Concrete pools:
The royal road with risks

Promise: Unlimited design, maximum durability
In practice: Perfect with good planning, catastrophe with poor execution

Critical success factors:

  • Professional sealing (biggest source of error)
  • Quality concrete with appropriate additives
  • Professional reinforcement
  • Experienced pool builder

Most common cost traps:
Subsequent sealing problems (15,000-40,000 € refurbishment costs), inadequate technical planning

What a pool really costs

The purchase is only the first step. An example shows how the total sum is made up and which running costs should be realistically planned for:

Example steel wall pool 7×3.5 meters:

  • Pool set: € 4,500
  • Earthworks: € 2,500
  • Concrete slab: 1.800 €
  • Technical installation: € 1,200
  • First filling: 300 €
  • Basic equipment: 800 €
  • Total costs: €11,100 (instead of the advertised €4,500)

Annual operating costs (realistic calculation)

Smaller pool (25 m³):

  • Electricity (pump, heating): 600-1,200 €
  • Chemicals: 200-400 €
  • Water (refill): 150-300 €
  • Maintenance/repairs: 300-800 €
  • Annual: € 1,250-2,700

Larger pool (50 m³):

  • Operating costs increase to € 2,000-4,500 per year

Utilizing energy-saving potential

A high-quality pool cover saves 60-70% of heating costs. Investment: € 3,000-15,000, amortization usually after 2-4 years.

New technologies make pools more efficient, more comfortable and more sustainable.

Three examples show how you can save costs and improve water quality with modern technology.

Salt water instead of chemicals

Instead of manually dosing chlorine, a salt water system automatically generates the required chlorine from salt. Advantages: pleasant feeling on the skin, constant water quality, less chemical handling. Costs: €1,000-3,000 extra, amortizes itself through lower chemical consumption.

Heating with efficiency

Modern inverter heat pumps are three to five times more efficient than electric heating elements. Example: Heating a pool from 15 °C to 26 °C costs €150-300 with a heat pump and €600-1,200 with an electric heater.

Control via app

Smart pool systems enable app control for heating, lighting and water maintenance. Particularly useful for year-round use and larger budgets. Costs: €1,500-5,000, depending on the scope.

Your path to the right pool decision

There is no such thing as the perfect pool, but there is one that is right for you.
Instead of following the cheapest offer or trusting the most expensive one, you should proceed systematically:

➤ Set an honest budget, including all ancillary costs

➤ Have the space and feasibility checked (ground, access road)

➤ Realistically question usage (daily or only at weekends)

➤ Fully compare offers (total costs, not just purchase)

➤ View references (similar pools after a few years of operation)

The most important rule: don’t let yourself be put under pressure. A hasty decision can weigh you down for decades, a well-planned one will give you decades of pleasure.

Ready for professional advice?

Arrange a non-binding appointment. Together we will examine your situation and find the solution that suits you in terms of technology, budget and design.

Which pool is the easiest to maintain?

GRP and PP pools with salt water system and automatic pH regulation. The time required is only five to ten minutes per week. The investment in automation pays off in terms of time saved and permanently better water quality.

Do I need a pool heater?

Without heating, you can only swim for three to four months in Germany (June to September). With a heat pump, the season is extended to May to October, with a cover even to April to November. Four to five additional months usually justify the investment.

How big should my pool be?

For families with children, we recommend at least six by three meters. For athletic swimming, at least eight by three meters, preferably ten by four meters. Pools that are too small quickly lose their appeal and are rarely used.

Natural pool or classic pool?

Natural pools require twice the area (swimming area and regeneration zone), cost similar to concrete pools, but have a completely different water quality. This is a matter of personal preference.

Can follow-up costs be reduced?

Yes, through clever planning: a high-quality cover saves up to 60 percent on heating costs, correctly dimensioned technology reduces repairs, a salt water system reduces the need for chemicals, a PV system provides cheap pool electricity.
